Boat Plans Leeboards

A leeboard is a lifting foil used by a sailboat, much like a centreboard, but located on the leeward side of the boat. the leeward side is used so that the leeboard is not lifted from the water when the boat heels, or leans under the force of the wind.. With small boats leeboard water tends to get trapped against the hull of the boat. waves then can get squeezed in the passage between the boat and the leeboards and water can kick up into the air. on most traditional leeboard designs, the windward leeboard is retracted when it isn't needed.. The photo is of the final epoxy coat before sanding smooth and painting or varnishing. q whereas the foils as specified in my plans are much the same as those on thousands of racing dinghies that race every week with no damage at all..

Leeboards never became popular on the north american continent, mainly because their working is not properly understood. a plank against the leeside of a hull does not make a leeboard. figure 9-5 is a dangerous no-no..
